Kristoffer Gansing

Kristoffer Gansing has been the artistic director of the transmediale festival between 2012 and 2020. As a curator and researcher he is interested in the intersections of media, art, and activism. He is co-founder of the festival The Art of the Overhead (2005) and from 2007-2010 was an editorial board member of the artist-run channel tv-tv in Copenhagen. From 2001-11 he taught the theory and practice of new media at the K3 School of Arts and Communication at Malmö University. In 2013 he completed his PhD thesis, entitled Transversal Media Practices, a study dealing with media archaeology, art, and technological development.

Inspired by the pre-Internet idea of networks, transmediale 2020 focuses on both forgotten and potential futures with and without networks. Leaving behind a decade marked by a backlash against the Internet and the network society, transmediale aims at a comprehensive re-evaluation of networks and their limits.

The net jargon acronym BWPWAP – Back When Pluto Was a Planet is an expression used whenever one wants to talk about things in our recent past that have changed quickly. transmediale 2013 suggested that this classification crisis, spurred on by new technologies and shifting knowledge paradigms, opens up a rich space of cultural negotiation and artistic intervention.
