The Collegium Hungaricum Berlin was established in 1924 and re-opened its doors on historical grounds in Berlin-Mitte, Dorotheenstraße 12, in November 2007. The new institute was designed in the style of Neobauhaus and demands for contemporary contents and forms of expression. Over the course of the past four years the .CHB has emerged as an excellent centre for art and media within the cultural landscape of Berlin-Mitte. Since 2008 Collegium Hungaricum Berlin has been hosting projects on the intersection of art, science and research in close conjunction with transmediale.

The transmediale 2012 performance programme features the legendary Joshua Light Show, which in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s became known through their colourful improvisational performances at the NYC venue Fillmore East, providing visuals to groups such as Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa. In their contemporary performances, The Joshua Light Show connects the analogue light show to digital technology, fusing old and new, and demonstrating how intermedia forms such as the light show form an important point in the history of network culture aesthetics. The light show embodied a multimedial approach before the digital convergence of different media, dynamically playing off seemingly incompatible media elements. This evening, co-presented by transmediale curator Sandra Naumann and The Art of the Overhead is hosted by the .CHB, which is particularly interested in supporting audiovisual experiments in the fields of VJing, live and expanded cinema. The evening concludes with an AV live performance by ZOLA, a Hungarian VJ who visualises in his AV-set projective surfaces of relational networks and the theory of probabilities.

Programme:

19:00
O-History! A Geneaology of the Overhead Projector
A performance lecture uncovering the multi-layered family-tree of that most important light show instrument: The Overhead Projector.

By The Art of the Overhead (Linda Hilfling & Kristoffer Gansing)

20:00
Joshua White (us) artist talk
Moderated by Sandra Naumann (de)

In this conversation, curator and researcher Sandra Naumann and Joshua White, the founder of The Joshua Light Show, will explore the evolution of live cinema improvisation from the 1960’s until today.

21:00

AV Live Performance by ZOLA based on the following citation: "The fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point either exactly or approximately a message selected at another point." A Mathematical Theory of Communication by C.E. Shannon. The Hungarian VJ ZOLA visualises in his AV-set projective surfaces of relational networks and the theory of probabilities.

Programm:

19:00
- O-History! A Geneaology of the Overhead Projector
Mit The Art of the Overhead (Linda Hilfling & Kristoffer Gansing)

- Joshua White (us) Artist Talk
Moderiert von Sandra Naumann (de)
Im Gespräch zwischen Kuratorin und Wissenschaftlerin Sandra Nauman und Joshua White, dem Gründer der Joshua Light Show, wird die Evolution von Live Cinema Improvisation von den 60ern bis heute untersucht.
