The Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research is transmediale’s longest-running residency, established in 2012. It is a cooperation with the Vilém Flusser Archive at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK), which holds the literary estate of the cultural theorist Vilém Flusser. The programme supports knowledge production as a core principle of artistic research, fostering dialogue between science and art, theory and practice, old and new media, and local and global contexts.
For Vilém Flusser, theory and praxis were inseparable. His nomadic thinking was shaped by experimentation, cross-disciplinary approaches, and dialogue. Rather than searching for fixed truths, he explored the aesthetic constitution of truth in relation to others. The residency invites artistic research projects that engage with the potentials and limitations of transdisciplinary and transmedial practices in contemporary culture. Artistic research is understood here as an exploration of the links between aesthetics, materiality, politics, and history. Flusser’s legacy offers a critical lens through which to examine emerging technologies and their genealogies. His thinking, often associated with media archaeology, encourages us to question not only technological innovation but also the historical, cultural, and epistemic conditions that shape it.
