Bhenji Ra is an Australian Filipina artist working at the intersections of dance, video and community activation. Rooted in trans feminist, inter-generational practice, her work engages with invisible social narratives of both trauma and rejuvenation, offering novel and fugitive possibilities to decolonise community and reinvent becoming.
Guided by her ancestral and queer genealogies, she weaves together vast tapestries of ritual, archive and collective action that draw upon the intersections and intimacies of her personhood. Her assemblage of myth, archive and pedagogical practices, especially in non-western choreography, results in deeply collaborative and relational performances conceptualised and embodied through diverse locations in long periods of time, developing languages of movement to connect vocabularies of gender with past and present imperial realities, particularly those embedded in violence. With each work, Ra puts forward her body as an initial site of play as well as an ultimate place of struggle and emancipation.
Dwelling in between riot and ceremony, Bhenji Ra’s performative form aspires toward radical gesture, to dream the future of the body among other bodies freely moving in intersectional difference.
