Providing a forum in which to discuss concerns regarding artistic projects realised in Asia and shown in Europe, this Salon Talk takes its title from NCS’s recent film Near Mandalay. After a panel-related screening, the speakers will introduce particular projects that designate a web of relational movements: from London to Karachi/Pakistan, places near Mandalay in the military dictatorship of Myanmar (Burma), and Asian women's films in Berlin.

The relationship between ‘here’ and ‘elsewhere’ provides a point of departure to reflect on the possibilities and impossibilities of shifting spaces as well as on the politics of image production. Asking questions regarding dislocation and origin, the panel will also investigate the specific political conditions and impact created through the presentation of these projects in a European art festival such as transmediale. The question of the title points towards a particular filming perspective and also indicates implicitly the different spans of wandering between localities of both production and presentation.

In diesem Salon Talk geht es um asiatische Kunstprojekte, die in Europa gezeigt werden. So ist auch der Titel treffend ein Zitat aus NCS’ jüngstem Film Near Mandalay. Im Anschluss an ein Screening zum Thema werden die Sprecher eine Reihe von Projekten vorstellen, die ein Netz aus relationalen Bewegungen aufspannen: zwischen London und Karachi/Pakistan, Orten in der Nähe von Mandalay in der Militärdiktatur Myanmar (Burma) und Werken asiatischer Filmemacherinnen in Berlin.

Das Verhältnis von ‚Hier‘ und ‚Anderswo‘ bildet hierbei den Ausgangspunkt für eine Reflexion über die Möglichkeiten und Unmöglichkeiten, zwischen Orten zu wechseln, sowie über die Politik der Bildproduktion. Vor dieser Fragestellung wird die Diskussionsrunde auch die politischen Auswirkungen untersuchen, wenn diese Projekte im Rahmen europäischer Kunstfestivals wie der transmediale gezeigt werden. Die Titelfrage deutet auf eine bestimmte Perspektive des Filmemachers und weist implizit gleichsam auf das Durchlaufenwerden von unterschiedlichen Produktions- und Präsentationsstätten.
