Requiem for M is a memorial to the 2009 Maguindanao Massacre. On their way to file a certificate of candidacy for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the Philippine province of Maguindanao, 58 journalists, family members, and supporters of opposition candidate Esmael Mangudadatu were kidnapped and killed. Kiri Dalena captures scenes from the funerals of the victims and plays them in reverse, in the wistful yearning to turn back time to before the tragedy occurred. Her film tackles one of the Philippines’ most brutal political murders and the culture of impunity that keeps plaguing the country.

Auf dem Weg zur Einreichung der Kandidaturbescheinigung für die bevorstehenden Gouverneurswahlen in der philippinischen Provinz Maguindanao wurden 58 Journalist_innen, Familienmitglieder und Anhänger_innen des Oppositionskandidaten Ismael Mangudadatu entführt und getötet. Kiri Dalena fängt Szenen von den Beerdigungen der Opfer ein und spielt sie rückwärts ab, in der wehmütigen Sehnsucht, die Zeit zurückzudrehen – bis vor Eintritt der Tragödie. Ihr Film thematisiert einen der brutalsten politischen Morde auf den Philippinen und die Kultur der Straflosigkeit, die das Land weiterhin heimsucht.
