I’m an artist interested in the performance and burden (‘the drag’) of the physical body in a digitally mediated world, as well as what I am calling the ‘snapping-to-grid’ of templates both offline and online. I explore this through video, analogue and digital photography, music, community-based projects and #Sergina, a multi-bodied, border-straddling drag queen who sings and performs songs about love, lust and loneliness in the mesh of hyper-dis/connection. And asks people questions about how they are. Played by several different people over the past 8 years, #Sergina (plural) has performed in venues of many persuasions in the UK, Germany, Serbia, USA, Australia and Canada. And now, in collaboration and sometimes competition with this alter ego I am making my way through a PhD examining what I am calling the ‘Drag of Physicality in the Digital Age’, in which I am proposing drag and dragging as a potential mode and method of resistance to the tracking and tracing of legal identities and data discharge in a capitalist surveillance context. My work is collaborative and conversational, participatory, interactive and sometimes confrontational, and takes place frequently both online and offline simultaneously, on platforms I did not build myself. I have collaborated with Clareese Hill on a number of projects over the past two years, including the not conference Occupying the Inbetween, which took place in May 2020.
