Stovepipe to the Sun (Excerpt) combines research into a 19th century separatist women’s community in Belton, Texas and speculative filmmaking, as the filmmakers cast themselves and their friends as the present-day descendants. Interwoven into the experimental narrative is autobiographical recording of the filmmakers’ domestic life, as they struggle to raise their teenage daughter in a patriarchal society. Stovepipe to the Sun places research, fiction, and autobiography as co-occurring proposals for queer, feminist possibility.
