transmediale 2021–22 for refusal

transmediale 2021–22 culminates in January in a month-long exhibition at Berlin’s Akademie der Künste, and a two-day symposium at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

Throughout transmediale 2021–22, the festival focused on building sustainable relationships through the creation of new artists’ residencies, institutional partnerships and networks. The festival has taken place across multiple venues and platforms, including its first public space, transmediale studio, and its curatorial online platform Almanac for Refusal . The Almanac is a public archive and a space for commissioned artworks, for artists’ film, audio, talks and essays. Steered by a new artistic director, Nora O Murchú, the festival 2021–22 was reconfigured from its usual format to adapt to the transformed realities of living in a pandemic.

The concluding programme of transmediale 2021–22 will build on the festival’s theme for refusal, moving away from refusal as a generative space, towards a pragmatic confrontation with its impossibilities.
