We share the following with frustration and deep concern: One of our longstanding main funders, the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (BpB), has decided to discontinue its support of transmediale after more than 20 years. This is in line with the ongoing pressure on the funding and work of independent arts and culture in Germany. Following multiple changes in BpB's leadership in the past months, we are not the only organisation affected by this shift; in Berlin, to name only one example, Schaubühne recently announced that their "Streitraum" is not being funded by BpB anymore. Combined with the defunding from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) since last year, these cuts total roughly 120.000€. Together, they will have a huge and debilitating impact on our work, team, planning, and ultimately on the ability of the festival to deliver the experience our audience expects and deserves.
