Letters from the Unmodelled

Drawing on sociologist Noortje Marres's concept of technological testing grounds – where new technologies test not just functionality but society's acceptance or resistance – a lecture-performance by Catherine Griffiths examines how public protests have become experimental sites for AI surveillance and skeleton-tracking systems. Revealing how algorithms and models work to embed different worldviews and values, the piece investigates dynamics of proximity and distance: between those imprisoned and those free, between abstract technical systems and lived experience, between current resistance and impending climate collapse. The performance brings these tensions to life by weaving together voices of imprisoned UK climate activists with large-scale video projections that alternate between abstract visualizations of datasets and technical workflows, and documentary footage of non-violent direct actions in London's streets.

A dynamic and multilayered conversation will follow as Marija Ristic, Anna Engelhardt, and Julian Oliver join Griffiths to explore what remains "unmodelled" – from excluded data to imprisoned activists to climate disaster itself – while exploring the shifting relationships between surveillance, public space, and resistance.
