Mario Santanilla

In the centre of the stage is a cluster of chairs spaced out like an aeroplane cabin. A choreography of light and sound descends on the stage as a feed of information scrolls controlled by Mario Santanilla. The stage becomes a space of commingling temporalities and rationalities, drawing the audience into an amalgamation of acts that explore the absurdity of our “fast-frictionless” times. HANDOFF explores how culture is passed between generations and technological devices. From intergenerational ceremonies to inter-device protocols, Santanilla probes the handoff of culture – the residues of what has become lost content – through personal anecdotes, moments in history, and cultural memory.

Commissioned for transmediale 2024, HANDOFF is the latest iteration of Mario Santanilla's While some cry, others sell tissues - the nature of becoming extinct (2017–ongoing). This new version is a collaboration with Reuben Merringer.
