“Death and taxes are unresolved engineering problems.” The opening quote of Hernández López’s film suggests that the Libertarian pursuit of freedom attempts to liberate the body and the free market from any material constraints. As the films show, it is a freedom that does not yet exist in this world. Investigating how such otherworldly freedoms are communicated, desired, and practiced, Gala Hernández López and Mohamed Berro make apparent the exploitative reality of cryptocurrencies, cryogenics, virtual realities, and micronations.
Gala Hernández López’s film, for here am i sitting in a tin can far above the world, explores the links between financial speculation, speculative science-fiction, and the prediction and governance of the future. Mohamed Berro’s To Live and Let Live (TLLL) follows both a music festival organised by Liberland, an unrecognised Libertarian micronation near the Serbian-Croatian border, and the refugee crisis unfolding along the same border. Facing this false dichotomy, the film undermines the promises of freedom and anti-statist foundations of Libertarian projects manifesting in today's political landscape.
A conversation between the film makers will take place after the screening.
