In this book launch, Taina Bucher will present her new book IF...THEN: Algorithmic Power and Politics (Oxford University Press, 2018) and engage in a conversation with the media theorist Eric Snodgrass about algorithmic power, its imaginaries, and ways of knowing algorithms. The book provides a critical analysis of the current algorithmic media landscape by investigating social media platforms, journalism, and people’s encounters with algorithms online. The argument is made that algorithmic power and politics is not necessarily to be found in the algorithm per se, but in how and when different aspects of algorithms and the algorithmic are made available to specific actors, under particular circumstances.
