Referencing queer club culture, love hotels, and reality TV, Surrender draws parallels between 20th-century dance marathons and the attention economy of the digital age. Through its portrayal of participants fuelled by “Limitless Growth” energy drinks in a surreal dance competition, the work parodies the relentless demands for attention and the complex motivations that drive individuals to occupy themselves with digital distractions.
In the perpetually looping video, the dance floor shape-shifts between multiple scenarios – a cell, a nightclub, the belly of a whale, a courtroom, a labyrinth, a treadmill, and a beating heart – interchanging spaces exploring themes of exhaustion and surrender in the ever-consuming digital landscape of content creation.
