Playing on the Brazilian Portuguese notion of rede – a word that names both network and hammock, and one of the few surviving words from the Taíno, the largest endemic community in the Caribbean before Spanish colonization – transmediale will host a series of hanging structures: hammocks installed across the festival venues, creating spaces of net•resting where we can balance each other.
A collection of hammocks, or a net of nets, is called a Redário. Here, Redários manifest as a social protocol, a pocket infrastructure, and a hybrid installation, asking what it would mean to conceive, design, and develop our networks as hammocks: more-than-binary nets that do not sustain themselves at the expense of other bodies or environments, but instead hold space for mutual balance – and for lying in a way that puts the body at ease.
