Historically, quilts have been made by the community for the community. First woven to provide warmth under armour, then used as bedding, these infrastructures of survival and care also tell us about present-day operations of solidarity. When found scraps of warp and weft are stitched together, whether in data processing (algorithms and machine learning) or creating physical patterns and textures (weaving and quilting), the systematic arrangement of elements often create a coherent and meaningful structure.

In Quilting in Real-time, Louis Chude-Sokei, Svitlana Matviyenko, Nelly Y. Pinkrah, and Helen Starr ask each other how they inhabit the topologies of a diminishing internet. In a call-and-response format, their seemingly disparate experiences and geographies are brought into relation in an ongoing attempt to unsettle narratives to decolonize the internet as we know it, imagining a feminist parallel that is more nuanced and intersectional, where networks and open-source software are restitched together to make possible new models of reality.
