The stations engage with history as a field of unrealised potential, returning to the archive to reopen possibilities within the present.
Since the late 1980s, transmediale has developed alongside technological change, registering and responding to the social and political transformations produced within technologies. The Archival Stations draw on transmediale’s 40-year history, using the festival’s archive as a political resource, a constellation of practices and ideas that were developed, practised, abandoned, partially forgotten, or failed.
Within each Archival Station, visitors can read and browse a selection of documents and historical materials from the archival research. Each artwork in the exhibition is linked to a station, providing historical and conceptual background, connecting the different works and practices, and enabling a non-linear navigation of the exhibition.
