Alex Adriaansens (1953–2018)

We regret to mark the passing of Alex Adriaansens, co-founder and longtime director of V2_ in Rotterdam and the longest running member of the transmediale advisory board.

We regret to mark the passing of Alex Adriaansens, co-founder and longtime director of V2_ in Rotterdam and the longest running member of the transmediale advisory board. With his great experience in the field of art and technology, Alex’s voice was equally full of enthusiasm and clear sight. As active member of the transmediale advisory board since 2003, Alex’s support was astounding: He always attended as many events as possible during transmediale and CTM and gave detailed feedback at every advisory board meeting until very recently. Alex will be deeply missed by us as well as by many colleagues and artists all over the world and we would like to point to some of the touching statements already made by his network:

“For over thirty-five years, Alex was active in the field of art and technology, as an initiator, an organizer, and as an advisor. His influence on many of us was enormous. He projected an amazing, passionate engagement with art and with the ways in which new technologies impact society.”
Andreas Broeckmann for V2, fmr. Artistic Director of transmediale

"As one of the most energetic, creatively inspiring and poetically succinct lights in the worlds of art and technology - with a deep felt passion and true understanding of what the concept of an ‘unstable media’ are on society - Alex will be dearly missed. His unwavering optimism, team spirit, and unique ability to critically peer beyond the obvious are qualities we need more, and not less of today."
– Stephen Kovats,
r0g_agency for open culture and critical transformation Berlin, fmr. Artistic Director of transmediale

“Adriaansens was a true icon, with the very rare quality, in the art world, of proving no need to boost his ego, and, on the contrary, sharing the mission to support countless artists, ideas, and projects, using the institution as a tool. He was articulating himself through V2_ as a whole working system, never stopping producing and discussing the cleverly defined ‘unstable media’”.
Alessandro Ludovico, Neural
