Since 1978, John Sanborn has been known world-wide for his innovative and experimental video art, and for creating effects which, years later, were adopted by other artists. The list of personalities that he has worked with is long: Philip Glass, The Residents, Grace Jones, Tangerine Dream, King Crimson, John Zorn and Todd Rundgren are only a few. Sanborn shot as many clips as ads, along with TV re ports and works for HDTV. For his prize-winning Infinite Escher video (1990), he used computer-generated elements to relate the fantasies of a little boy. In 1991, together with Todd Rundgen's MediaBand, he cre ated a CD-ROM with interactive music videos. His latest work is also interactive: the feature film Psychic Detective shown for the first time outside the United States at this year's VideoFest. Sanborn's works are presented here in four parts: In the first FOCUS part, he presents videos which, for him, were important in his development: a mini-retrospective made up, in part, of excerpts (see following page). In the second FOCUS part, he presents Psyschic Detective with comments on the production style, the principle be hind the CD-ROMs and their function, interactive possibili ties and more. In that day's MAIN PROGRAMME, at 8.30 pm. Psychic Detective is screened in its entirety and controlled, in turn, by different viewers, accuenting the film's variants. (A second screening with different variants is on Sunday, February 25th, at 6.00 pm.)
