Transitland Destination Berlin

Transitland presents a curated selection of 100 videos spanning the past 20 years. Transitland Destination Berlin sees the launch of the publicly accessible video archive, contextualizing it with discussions, performances and screenings after a series of events in Eastern Europe.

Transitland Destination Berlin (TDB) takes place in Berlin at the historic Collegium Hungaricum (CHB) in the days just prior to the European-wide commemorations and celebrations of the events of 9 November 1989 - the Fall of the Berlin Wall, and the ensuing changes throughout Europe and the world.

TDB celebrates the launch of the digital video archive, making it accessible to the public and contextualising the work with a programme of complementary discussions, performances and screenings taking place over the course of three days. Highlighting the ongoing work of 'New Europe', TDB premieres the 6 commissioned video works of the Transitland project and the Transitland publication.

In keeping with the spirit of the project and honouring video as an important element in contemporary cultural work, artists, theorists and curators are invited to discuss the role of video in art and political work across Europe as well as to examine the influence of Eastern European work on video art as a genre in general.
Performative talks will illustrate how video is used by artists today. A continuous parallel screening program will present works from the archive. The archive itself will be available to the public: they can browse and view the works included on archive stations at the CHB. The screening program will also take to the streets, as it is projected on the massive screens of the Collegium Hungaricum.

Transitland EUROPA is a collaborative project organized by InterSpace [Sofia], transmediale [Berlin] and Ludwig Museum [Budapest] that aims to create a video archive of 100 works spanning the 20 years since the fall of the Berlin wall. The archive of 100 works includes works, produced in the period 1989-2008 and newly commissioned videos (produced in 2009). The works have been selected by a jury of external experts and co-organisers . The output includes archive jukeboxes and thematic compilations that travel to different venues in Europe, a website for international information, a print publication as well as a DVD compilation of the commissioned videos. TDB is the final Transitland event following a combination of screenings and discursive events in Bulgaria, Hungary and associated partners’ locations.

Discussions from Transitland Destination Berlin will be broadcast on Herbstradio 99.1 FM Berlin.
