La Chambre Des Machines

La Chambre Des Machines

At the beginning of the 20th century, when Italian futurist Luigi Russolo began to include 'noise' in musical composition, he made a box into a musical instrument. This box, the Intonarumori, concealed mysterious mechanisms. Contrary to the Intonarumori, the box designed by Alexandre Landry and played by Martin Messier and Nicolas Bernier in the world première of La Chambre Des Machines is open. In revealing the mechanisms of both the Intonarumori and a collection of old clocks, the artists allow audiences to better understand the music qualities of these closed boxes. Without tainting their nostalgic quality, the duo use digital technologies to give a new context to the sounds generated, crafting noise in real-time and sharing the heart of the objects' hidden mechanisms.
