Born in Tokyo, raised in London, and currently residing in Berlin, Mari Matsutoya’s work often reflects on the mediation between these cultures and languages in her work. Having first studied German literature at King’s College London and then studying fine art and sound studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin, her focus is on language as a mirror to reality and as a medium on the fence between the visual and the sonic. One of the threads that can be traced throughout her work is the voice as expressive medium and social instrument. Previous shows and performances have been held at Tokyo Wonder Site, General Public, and Arndt Berlin.
