transmediale 2014 afterglow opens festival week on January 29th, 2014 at HKW, Berlin

On January 29th, 2014 at 17:30 transmediale 2014 afterglow, festival for art and digital culture, will open its doors at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW).

The official opening of transmediale 2014 afterglow will happen with the opening ceremony in the Auditorium at 19:00.

Leading up to the opening ceremony, Borja Rodríguez Alonso’s installation Why will be shown, a work based on an everyday Google function – the autocomplete, which opens up a frightening cabinet of curiosities that extends from racism and sexism to an infantile curiosity about body parts. Only with questions about religion do they become startlingly objective, which reinforces the idea of Google interference.
In Pawel Ziemilski’s Rogalik the viewer roams around desolate flats in a Polish village by way of extended tracking shots. The people look strangely unreal in this mix of photographic portraits and tableaux vivants.

During the opening ceremony Kristoffer Gansing, artistic director of transmediale, will introduce afterglow as a diagnosis of post-digital culture after introductory words by Bernd Scherer, director of HKW.
Together with several guests, the “afterglow effects” that define the current ambiguous state of digital culture between trash and treasure will be outlined.
American sci fi writer and cultural critic Bruce Sterling will depict the cypherpunk dystopia that digital culture has become and suggest ways to deal critically and creatively with its seedy geopolitics.
Throughout the ceremony, CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE (Jamie Allen & David Gauthier), the big data producing artwork of transmediale 2014 will provide essential facts about everything you ever needed to know about the festival. Chances are you might get your burning questions answered such as what the correlation is between the transmediale festival and the global annual growth of e-waste.

Following the opening ceremony, Art Hack Day Berlin will open after a 48 hours hackathon of roughly 80 artists and hackers.
In collaboration with Berlin-based Lab for Electronic Arts and Performance (LEAP) and Art Hack Day the second edition of Art Hack Day Berlin will be opened responding to the thematic framework of afterglow.
Art Hack Day is a project dedicated to cracking open the process of art-making, with special reference toward open-source technologies.
As part of the opening there will be several performances and presentations, including Geraldine Juárez who will burn bitcoins outside HKW at 21:00 in her performance Hello Bitcoin.
For Ceremonial Chamber Birch Cooper and Brenna Murphy a.k.a. MSHR kneel inside an array of hand built analogue synthesizers, colored lights, mirrors and drift wood, forming a human-scale circuit between performance and installation. The interactive installation is open from 17:30; and the performance after the ceremony.

Starting at 21:30 the dual slide projection Utopia by Luther Price will be shown in the Auditorium as an exclusive opening installation. The American film artist creates unsettling collages made out of old films, hair and scratches.

transmediale 2014 afterglow eröffnet Festivalwoche am 29.1.2014 im HKW

Am 29. Januar 2014 um 17:30 Uhr öffnet die transmediale 2014 afterglow, Festival für Kunst und digitale Kultur, ihre Türen im Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW).

Die offizielle Eröffnungszeremonie der transmediale 2014 findet am selben Tag um 19:00 Uhr im Auditorium statt.

Hinleitend zur Zeremonie wird Borja Rodríguez Alonsos Installation Why gezeigt, eine Arbeit, die auf der alltäglichen Google-Funktion Autocomplete basiert und ein erschreckendes Panoptikum offenbart, welches über Rassismus, Sexismus bis hin zu einer infantilen Neugier über Körperteile reicht.
In Pawel Ziemilskis Installation Rogalik durchstreift der Betrachter in langen Kamerafahrten trostlose Wohnungen in einem polnischen Dorf, in dem die Menschen seltsam unwirklich erscheinen - eine Mischung aus fotografischem Portrait und Tableaux Vivant.

Während der Eröffnungszeremonie wird Kristoffer Gansing, künstlerischer Leiter der transmediale, nach einleitenden Worten von Bernd Scherer, Direktor des HKW, afterglow als Diagnose postdigitaler Kultur einführen.
Mit einer Reihe von Gästen werden die afterglow effects skizziert, die den gegenwärtigen ambivalenten Zustand der digitalen Kultur zwischen „Trash” und „Treasure” bestimmen. Der amerikanische Science Fiction-Autor und Kulturkritiker Bruce Sterling wird die Cypherpunk-Dystopie darstellen, zu der die digitale Kultur geworden ist, und Wege vorschlagen, kritisch und kreativ mit ihrer verwahrlosten Geopolitik umzugehen.
Jamie Allen und David Gauthier präsentieren während der Zeremonie das Big Data produzierende Kunstwerk der transmediale 2014, CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE, für das wesentliche Fakten über das Festival gesammelt werden – wie zum Beispiel der Zusammenhang zwischen der transmediale und dem jährlichen Wachstum von Elektroschrott.

Im Anschluss an die Eröffnungszeremonie wird nach einem 48-stündigen Hackathon von rund 80 Künstlern und Hackern in Kollaboration mit dem Berliner Lab for Electronic Arts and Performance (LEAP) und Art Hack Day der zweite Teil des Art Hack Day Berlin zum Festivalthema afterglow eröffnet.
Bei dem Art Hack Day geht es darum, den Prozess der Kunstproduktion mit besonderer Ehrerbietung in Richtung Open Source-Technologie aufzubrechen.
Mehrere Performances und Präsentationen sind Teil der Eröffnung; unter anderem Geraldine Juárez, die in ihrer Performance Hello Bitcoin um 21:00 Uhr Bitcoins vor dem Haus der Kulturen der Welt verbrennen wird.

Zwischen Performance und Installation bearbeiten Birch Cooper und Brenna Murphy von MSHR in Ceremonial Chamber eine Reihe von handgemachten analogen Synthesizern, farbigen Lichtern, Spiegeln und Treibholz, um einen menschengroßen Stromkreis zu bauen. Die interaktive Installation ist ab 17:30 Uhr zu sehen; die Performance findet nach der Zeremonie statt.

Ab 21:30 Uhr wird im Auditorium die Dia-Doppelprojektion Utopia von Luther Price als Eröffnungsinstallation gezeigt. Der amerikanische Filmkünstler schafft beunruhigende Materialcollagen aus alten Filmen, Haaren und Kratzern.

Während des Presserundgangs am 28. Januar 2014 um 12:00 Uhr im Haus der Kulturen der Welt wird das Programm der transmediale 2014 afterglow in Form einer Einführung in das Konferenzprogramm sowie einer Vorschau des Ausstellungs- und Filmprogramms erfahrbar gemacht.
Pressepässe können bereits einen Stunde vor dem Start des Rundgangs am Pressecounter im HKW abgeholt werden.
