‘Taken’ is an interactive video installation which allows for readings and interpretations of the activities in the gallery space with the help of surveillance cameras. ‘Taken' suggests a critical reflection on the methods of observation and classification of people in public spaces. A double projection shows the gallery visitors moving around in the exhibition spaces. On one side of the projection, gallery visitors are extracted from the ground of the gallery floors and walls and then looped back onto themselves in 20 second intervals. This image stream provides a kind of seething chaos of activity. Every now and then, a visual catalogue of the last 200 visitors of the gallery appears. Their portraits are isolated and projected out of the composite recording, whereupon random adjectives such as ‘unsuspecting’, ‘complicit’ or 'hungry' are ostensibly attributed to them.
