A promotional film made by Chevrolet for the 1940 New York World’s Fair. It begins with a futuristic vision of a household robot who can vacuum-clean with his feet, accept flowers and cook, whilst the woman of the house is able to relax by browsing through magazines. Leave it to Roll-Oh is not only an early depiction of such a household robot, but is also a forerunner of the intensive post-Second World War propaganda for the division of roles between the working husband and the leisurely housewife who is grateful for modern technology. With the short warning that this is “just a day dream after all” the film then turns to the rather less exciting “thinking machines” of the 1930s: electrical appliances such as toasters, coffee machines and automobile accessories.
