Katja Gunkel

Katja Gunkel, PhD, studied art education, art history and psychoanalysis at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Since 2011 she is a research associate and lecturer at the Institute of Art Education, department New Media. In 2017 she completed her PhD thesis, that was recently published by transcript under the title: Der Instagram-Effekt. Wie ikonische Kommunikation in den Social Media unsere visuelle Kultur prägt. Her research and teaching focuses on image and media sciences as well as pop and internet culture. She is currently researching the aesthetic-affective quality of memes with a special focus on animated gif and its use in social media.
