REMINDER: TM.12 – CALL FOR WORKS & RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

Thematische Ausschreibung 2012 / Vilém Flusser Residency Programme 2012

Einsendeschluss: 31 August 2011

THEMATISCHE AUSSCHREIBUNG 2012

Einsendeschluss: 15 August 2011

REMINDER: CTM – SPECTRAL

Einsendeschluss: 31 August 2011

Februar 2012 an verschiedenen Spielorten in Berlin statt.

Workshop Daten:

Samstag, 27 August 2011. 13.00 - 18.30 Uhr im Supermarkt, Berlin. Brunnenstraße 64, 13355 Berlin (U8 zwischen Bernauer Straße und Voltastraße).

Reiseführerin, Gastgeberin und Moderatorin: Pippa Buchanan

REMINDER: TM.12 – CALL FOR WORKS & RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

Open Call for Works 2012 / Vilém Flusser Residency Programme 2012

Deadline: August 31, 2011

We would like to thank those of you who have already sent in their application and kindly remind everyone that the calls will be open for about one more month, so there is little time left to submit!

OPEN CALL FOR WORKS 2012

The in/compatible theme addresses the double nature of in/compatibility: as a state of tension between systems it may lead to a breakdown or it can lead to a critical modification. When does modification lead to a critical reformulation and when is it merely a process of integration? And when does it actually pay off to stay incompatible?

With the conceptual framework of in/compatible we are looking for artistic works in any genre and format that either explicitly or in more subtle ways engage the incompatible nature of contemporary technological cultures. We imagine that these works rather than anticipating resolution, address, accentuate and invest in the unresolved tensions of media practices and systems. In particular we are calling for works that take us by surprise by not quite "fitting in".

The selected works will form part of our exhibition as well as of our screening, performance and conference programme.

The thematic call for works will be reviewed by the curatorial programme board, consisting of Tatiana Bazzichelli, Jacob Lillemose, Sandra Naumann, Marcel Schwierin and Kristoffer Gansing.

VILÉM FLUSSER RESIDENCY PROGRAMME 2012

The newly organised Vilém Flusser Residency Programme taking the form of a 2 months artistic research residency run by tm and UdK in Berlin, supports projects and activities, which are simultaneously conceptual and practice-based. The programme is geared towards the initiation of new research or to the further development of existing projects. We are calling upon artistic research to actively explore the capabilities and limitations of transdisciplinary and transmedial situations in contemporary culture and thus to understand artistic research as exploring the links between aesthetics, materiality and politics.

The residency call is reviewed by Claudia Becker (Vilém Flusser Archive), Julian Oliver (artist) and Kristoffer Gansing (tm artistic director).

IN/COMPATIBLE RESEARCH – CALL FOR PARTICIPATION OF PHD STUDENTS

Deadline: August 15, 2011

The in/compatible.research PhD workshop and conference that will take place November 16 - 18, 2011 is an event happening prior to the transmediale festival and is carried out in collaboration and with the support of the Digital Aesthetics Research Centre (DARC)/Centre for Digital Urban Living of Aarhus University. The workshop is kindly hosted by the Vilém Flusser Archive at the Universität der Künste in Berlin.

The workshop part is open to PhD students and approaches the in/compatible theme through three subtopics: interfaces, methods and markets. In the selection of participants, we are looking to address the theme of in/compatibility in terms of the diversity of research traditions and disciplines represented, including practice-based research. One of the assumptions behind the event on the whole is that critical insights and new possibilities derive from the various incompatibilities of interfaces (including those between humans and machines, as well as among humans and among machines).

Across the same days as the PhD workshops, there will be a programme open to the general public. This takes the form of an international conference aiming at creating a platform of exchange between scholars, researchers and artists exploring the in/compatible topic.

The outcome of the process will be published in a peer-reviewed newspaper format that is also a transmediale thematic publication and presented as part of the programme of the festival in 2012.

This call is part of our new "resource for transmedial culture," which will be officially launched at the next transmediale as a framework for events happening before and after the festival.

REMINDER: CTM – SPECTRAL

Deadline: August 31, 2011

This is to remind you that the CTM – Festival for Adventurous Music and Related Arts is now accepting projects and works for CTM's music, performance, discourse, workshop or exhibition programme.

Dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music and sound art, the CTM takes place parallel to and in cooperation with transmediale at various venues in Berlin. With the theme Spectral, CTM.12 dedicates itself to the musical and medial visitations of rejected past aesthetics and their unredeemed utopias or dystopias, the uncanniness of media's hallucinatory effects as well as the quest for experiences of transcendence.

Detailed information can be found on the CTM-website: http://www.ctm-festival.de/

TM.12 COLLABORATION WITH CODED CULTURES 2011

transmediale has been invited to curate a residency in the context of the theme "City as Interface" as part of the Coded Cultures festival. For this residency at the Museumsquartier (MQ) in Vienna we have chosen the artist Prayas Abhinav, a Bangalore based researcher who has been working in the areas of urbanism, temporary architecture, critical social practice, physical computing, gaming and sound. He was a TED Fellow (2009-10) and has been part of efforts to seed open content movements in India and in 2007 helped launching the Creative Commons India licenses. http://prayas.in

Within the residency at Coded Cultures, taking place between September 1 until October 2, 2011, Prayas will develop projects linking the threads of a transmediale project called "outResourcing" (see below) and his personal research into gaming cultures, physical computing, community and commons-based exchange. He will also be working to start conversational links between the maker and develop groups in Berlin and Bangalore.

The choice of the artist for the residency is connected to outResourcing, a transmediale collaboration project carried out with CEMA - Center for Experimental Media Arts at Prayas Abhinav's home institution, Srishti-School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore. This collaboration project explores the pervasive phenomenon of labor outsourcing from a critical constructive point of view and takes place within "Germany and India 2011-2012 – Infinite Opportunities", an initiative by the Goethe Institute, the German Federal Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA), which aims to highlight collaborative programmes and projects reflecting different facets of urban life and development such as mobility, architecture, energy planning, urban art and culture infrastructure.

The Coded Cultures Festival is a multinational initiative founded in 2004 by the group 5uper.net to discuss and reflect the intersections of media, art, society and technology in experimental settings of exihibitions, workshops, symposia, presentations and artistic interventions. In its fourth year, it will take place from September 21 until October 02, 2011 in Vienna, Austria under the theme "City as Interface".

Metanoia: Mindshift – Exploring pathways through freestyle learning

Can you explain your job to your parents?

Our ideas of a traditional career path and what we need to know in order to work have changed. Formal learning institutions in many parts of the world are too expensive and too slow to change.Technological advances have made it easier than before to share information and meet people with common and diverse interests. Alternative learning (eg. skill shares, learning exchanges) has always existed outside of traditional education contexts, however the motivations and opportunities for learning outside and between institutions have changed significantly due to technology and a globalised economy.

This half-day workshop will explore how we can navigate, define, share and remix our own learning (both formal and otherwise) in ever-changing contexts. Workshop participants will share their ideas and visions of learning futures to develop the foundations of a handbook for managing alternative learning journeys.

Workshop Dates:

Saturday, August 27, 2011. 13.00 – 18.30 at Supermarkt, Berlin. Brunnenstraße 64, 13355 Berlin (between U8 stop Bernauer Straße and Voltastraße). Exploration Guide, Host and Facilitator: Pippa Buchanan
