JOSHUA LIGHT SHOW

mit Supersilent, 1. Febr., 21:00 – 22:30,

Oneohtrix Point Never, 3. Febr., 21:00 – 22:30

und Manuel Göttsching, 4. Febr., 21:00 – 22:30

Labor Berlin 8 / Studio Weise7 – the in/compatible laboratorium

Ausstellungslaufzeit: 31. Jan. – 12. März, 2012 (Publikation erscheint am 9. März, 2012)

Öffnungszeiten: täglich 10:00 - 22:00

Führungen: täglich um 13:30 während der transmediale

Eintritt: frei

Ben Woodeson – Health & Safety Violation #36 – Bite you on your ass and kiss your socks goodbye

Gæoudjiparl – MORT AUX VACHES EKSTRA EXTRA - THE GÆOUDJI SYGNOK GIVE AWAY!

<collaborative documenting / archiving of netart.activities>

(Theatersaal, 1. Febr., 15:00).

MARSHALL MCLUHAN SALON / KANADISCHE BOTSCHAFT

Marshall McLuhan Lecture 2012 – Andrew Feenberg

Marshall McLuhan Salon  – The Jeremy Bailey Collection

– 5. Febr 2012

Öffnungszeiten: Do und Fr 10:00 – 18:00, Sa und So 14:00 – 18:00

JOSHUA LIGHT SHOW

featuring Supersilent, Feb 1, 21:00 – 22:30,

Oneohtrix Point Never, Feb 3, 21:00 – 22:30

and Manuel Göttsching, Feb 4, 21:00 – 22:30

At the centre of our upcoming performance programme is the legendary Joshua Light Show, who in the 1960s appeared at the New York Fillmore East club alongside Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors. Working with an arsenal of film, overhead and slide-projectors, colour wheels and other light-producing and reflecting objects, founder Joshua White will perform in Germany for the very first time and present his first analogue show in Europe since the 1960s. transmediale and CTM team up to present three spectacular nights of audiovisual performance at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, that will see the legendary Joshua Light Show collaborate with Norwegian improvisers Supersilent, the "hypnagogic" soundscapes of the young and critically celebrated Oneohtrix Point Never, and as a special highlight with Krautrock giant Manuel Göttsching (Ash Ra Tempel / Ashra).

FEATURED PROJECTS OF TRANSMEDIALE 2012

During the 2012 festival a number of special projects relating to the in/compatible thematic as well as the 25 year anniversary are presented at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. These take place outside the framework of the curated exhibition and feature new works especially developed for the festival.

Labor Berlin 8/ Studio Weise7 – the in/compatible laboratorium

The Weise7 in/compatible laboratorium is an experimental workspace of the artistic and engineering studio at Weisestrasse 7 in Neukölln and Labor Berlin at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The exhibition comments on our dependence on machines and networks, where each work represents a unique, critical engagement with the challenges of our "techno-political condition". Weise7 presents four in/compatible themes during transmediale 2012, which will afterwards be addressed in workshops and an archive publication. The exhibition is part of the ongoing Labor Berlin series at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, a project dedicated to international artists working in Berlin.

Participating artists are Bengt Sjölén, Brendan Howell, Danja Vasiliev, Gordan Savićić, Julian Oliver, Servando Barriero.

Exhibition dates: Jan 31 – Mar 12, 2012 (publication launch: Mar 9, 2012)

Opening times: daily 10:00 – 22:00

(Guided) Tours: daily 13:30 during transmediale

Cost: free

Ben Woodeson – Health & Safety Violation #36 – Bite you on your ass and kiss your socks goodbye

Ben Woodeson’s works are deliberately confrontational, aiming at an intense and visceral relationship both with the viewer and the exhibiting institution. Particularly since 2009 when Woodeson began his overtly provocative Health & Safety Violation series his works transmit threatening ripples of consequence. For transmediale in/compatible Woodeson presents a new work from this series. A seemingly innocent sculptural curtain bisects the foyer space obstructing the visitor’s default routes. Avoiding the work requires a conscious detour while also engaging with it requires a willingness to take risk – an "interactive" piece that does not pretend to be harmless.

Gæoudjiparl – MORT AUX VACHES EKSTRA EXTRA - THE GÆOUDJI SYGNOK GIVE AWAY!

Mort Aux Vaches Extra Extra is a compositional project launched by the musical maverick and warrior Gæoudjiparl to radically engage with and solve the crisis in computer music and media art. The project encompasses several albums, interactive game books, an autonomous school and now the large-scale installation MORT AUX VACHES EKSTRA EXTRA – THE GIVE AWAY! For the installation Gæoudjiparl has collected all his belongings (saved from the ruins of a collapsed railroad construction) and is giving them all away for free. At transmediale 2012 in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt the give-aways follow certain idiosyncratic rules and each will be accompanied by a small ritual lecture at a spot chosen by Gæoudjiparl.

Telekommunisten – R15N

The Telekommunisten Network, Dmytri Kleiner and Baruch Gottlieb present R15N as a telephone-based interactive installation available as the official miscommunication platform of transmediale 2012. R15N is an artwork in the form of an experimental mobile phone service, which attempts to generate local community engagement and communication. After registering with the service on www.r15n.net, participants will be randomly connected in the R15N community, able to initiate and share information. Every member thus eventually becomes engaged in a real conversation with another, engendering cohesion and complicity.

<collaborative documenting / archiving of netart.activities>

The video installation <collaborative documenting / archiving of netart.activities> initiated by constantdullaart.com & curatingyoutube.net together in a cooperation between Robert Sakrowski and Constant Dullaart. It consists of documentation of ephemeral net art pieces that have been shown at past transmediale festivals, and thus ties in closely with the panel discussion web.video – the new net.art? in the Theatersaal on 1 February at 15:00. In the archiving.netart project, YouTube is used as a kind of digital repository a collaborative means of safeguarding works of net art. By re-appropriating the existing structure of the video portal, a databank of net art is established, which goes beyond YouTube's own explicitly intended use.

MARSHALL MCLUHAN SALON / CANADIAN EMBASSY

Marshall McLuhan Lecture 2012 / Andrew Feenberg

With the Marshall McLuhan Lecture, the transmediale invites a figure in the Canadian cultural landscape, whose work expands on McLuhan’s media theories in the context of contemporary culture and society, to present their insights. The Marshall McLuhan Lecture 2012 will be held by Andrew Feenberg.

Lecture topic: Ten Paradoxes of Technology

This lecture presents a philosophy of technology. It draws on what we have learnt in the last 30 years as we abandoned old Heideggerian and positivist notions and faced the real world of technology. It turns out that most of our common sense ideas about technology are wrong. This is why Feenberg has put his ten propositions in the form of paradoxes, although he uses the word loosely to refer to the counter-intuitive nature of much of what we know about technology. The story is one of reconciling the incompatibilities between whole and part, lay and expert, means and ends, authority and democracy, reason and experience.

Wednesday, Feb 1, 18:00, Marshall McLuhan Salon, Embassy of Canada, Ebertstrasse 14, 10117 Berlin

This is a free event and the lecture will take place in English. To RSVP please email rsvp@transmediale.de with the subject heading 'McLuhan Lecture'. Please be prepared to present valid photo-ID at the door.

Marshall McLuhan Salon / The Jeremy Bailey Collection

transmediale 2012 and the Marshall McLuhan Salon of the Embassy of Canada present the exhibition The Jeremy Bailey Collection by Jeremy Bailey.

"Jeremy Bailey is a new media, video and performance artist whose work is often confidently self-deprecating in offering hilarious parodies of new media vocabularies" (Marisa Olson, Rhizome). This exhibition marks Bailey's first in Berlin and will include recent examples of many of his signature video works and ephemera, including Public Sculpture, VideoPaint, Colours of the Spectrum and Video Terraform Dance Party. In these works Bailey's "famous new media artist" persona demonstrates custom software of his own design. This software typically incorporates gestural interfaces and often augments reality in a way that Bailey satirically proposes makes us "much much more creative". Bailey applies his creative panache to help solve a diverse set of problems, from fascist oppression to city planning.

Preview date & time: Feb 1, 20:00 – 22:00 (following the Marshall McLuhan Lecture)

Exhibition dates: open daily from Feb 1 – 5, 2012

Opening times: Thur and Fri: 10:00 – 18:00, Sat and Sun: 14:00 – 18:00
